The SI-DRIVE System

The SI-DRIVE® (Subaru Intelligent Drive) system is a cutting-edge engine management technology, offering drivers different driving modes based on circumstances or conditions. SI-DRIVE® is the perfect solution for drivers who want to combine sporty driving with fuel efficiency, taking automotive performance to a new level.

The Subaru WRX (equipped with the Subaru Performance Transmission®) includes SI-DRIVE® with three distinct modes: Intelligent (I), Sport (S), and Sport Sharp (S#).

All Subaru Forester models from the 2019 model year are equipped with one of two versions of the SI-DRIVE® system, each featuring two distinct modes. The Forester Sport offers Intelligent (I) and Sport Sharp (S#) modes, while other trim levels offer Intelligent (I) and Sport (S) modes.

Starting from the 2020 model year, all Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek models with Lineartronic® CVT are equipped with the SI-DRIVE® system featuring Intelligent (I) and Sport (S) modes.

The Modes of the SI-DRIVE® System

Intelligent Mode (I)

In Intelligent mode, the SI-DRIVE® gradually opens the throttle to maximize fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and provide a smoother ride.The engine mapping also optimizes acceleration and torque parameters to maintain the most efficient settings, enhancing overall fuel economy by up to 10%. For vehicles equipped with Lineartronic® CVT or Subaru Performance Transmission® (SPT), this mode automatically targets the most energy-efficient gear. These features make it the ideal setting for urban environments or when frequent stops and starts are necessary. Intelligent mode is also suitable for challenging driving conditions, such as winter driving or gravel roads.

Sport Mode (S)

Sport mode is best suited for everyday driving, as it maintains the most efficient engine and transmission settings under normal circumstances but can provide precise engine response when needed.Here, the throttle opens more quickly compared to Intelligent mode, responding more directly to driver inputs. This mode also allows for smooth shifts, consistent acceleration at any speed, strong passing power, and overall confident handling. As such, it is well-suited for highways, suburban streets, and mountain roads.

Sport Sharp Mode (S#)

Sport Sharp mode harnesses the full potential of the SUBARU BOXER® engine and transmission — providing the most immediate response to driver inputs.This mode promotes an even more direct throttle response and precise control across the entire rev range, while holding lower gears longer on CVT or SPT models. Paddle shifters on CVT or SPT models give the driver better performance control with eight programmed gear ratios, simulating an eight-speed transmission. Sport Sharp mode is ideal for winding roads and confidently executing passing and merging maneuvers on the highway.
