VDC: Putting the “dynamic” in vehicle dynamics

Simply put, Subaru's Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) is a type of electronic stability program. This advanced active safety device uses sensors to analyze wheel speed, steering wheel position, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration. If the sensors detect that the vehicle is not moving in the desired direction, the system takes measures to try to correct the situation.

Since most Subaru models are equipped with symmetrical all-wheel drive, the VDC system first relies on it to maximize traction and restore stability at the first signs of trouble. If this measure does not have the desired effects, the VDC takes corrective actions by modulating the torque distribution between the front and rear (SPT and CVT models only), applying brakes to individual wheels, modulating engine sequence, and reducing the fuel flow to the engine. This combination of Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive and VDC provides a superior level of active safety and many other unique advantages.

Unique Advantages of Subaru's VDC

By helping to ensure better control and a higher level of active safety without hindering the driver's maneuvers, Subaru's VDC proves to be a very effective tool. The inherent weakness of many stability control systems is that they sometimes improve stability at the expense of momentum. Subaru's VDC system is different — here's why…
Maintains dynamic momentum

Maintains Dynamic Momentum

Many car manufacturers use traction and/or stability control systems as alternatives to AWD. Some use these systems on vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive, but if it is a temporary or on-demand system, it deactivates as soon as the brakes are applied. In the case of vehicles equipped with Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive, the drivetrain is perfectly integrated with the VDC to maintain stability without compromising dynamic momentum.Since power is distributed to all four wheels at all times, the slipping wheel regains traction more quickly. This can be critical in certain situations, such as when merging into fast-moving traffic after a stop or in winter conditions.

engagement

Maximizes Driver Engagement

Some stability control systems can intervene intrusively, undermining the driver's sense of control. Subaru models equipped with symmetrical all-wheel drive require less assistance from the VDC from the outset, leaving the controls to the driver and maximizing their engagement. However, on the rare occasions when conditions require it, the system ensures a smooth, quick, and seamless transition from a low-traction situation to a fully stabilized one — without unnecessary, extreme, or sudden intervention. Subaru's most performance-oriented all-wheel-drive vehicle – the WRX – takes this approach to the next level with the multi-mode VDC system. The system features three different settings (normal mode, traction mode, and off) to give the driver even more control over the driving experience without compromising safety in the slightest.

stability

Restores Stability Faster

If the Subaru VDC system detects slippage on a particular wheel, it applies the brakes to that wheel. Again, since all wheels are linked to a symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the braked wheel regains traction more quickly than on a front-wheel-drive or temporary all-wheel-drive vehicle, causing the vehicle to return to the desired path faster. While the general impression is that all-wheel drive is a superior solution in adverse conditions, the truth is that it is a superior solution in all conditions — even when driving too fast on perfectly dry pavement.
